Encouragement for When You’re Feeling Down

Feeling down?

We all have days when were feeling down and in need of encouragement. We can go through seasons of life, good and not so good patches. Sometimes we may just have some down days and we don’t even know why. I used to say that I “Just felt Meh!” (no that is definitely not the technical term!) Or sometimes we do know why but we just don’t want to feel that way. I mean, who does?

Are you experiencing this right now? If not now can you relate to these times and this feeling of “Meh”?

Encouragement for when your feeling down

Encouraging Scripture & Thoughts

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Ooh, ouch! what a scripture to start off with! We are being told that it’s in the commandments not to be dismayed and to be strong and courageous. I know and understand there are some times where just don’t FEEL that way. But this is exactly when we remind ourselves that God is with us everywhere and in everything. Again, it may not FEEL like it. But in our heart and spirit we know the truth and that is that He is. But it is up to us to remember that. And we can use the strength and courage of the Holy Spirit.

Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

“Fear not.” He knows we are or can be fearful. We are human. And it is Ok not to be Ok sometimes but we can connect with the Holy Spirit that is in us for that help and strength. We just need to ask/ pray for exactly that.

Another weapon we have when we feel this way is worship. Again we may not FEEL like worshipping when we feel like that, but the chances are, if we are honest and admit, that we don’t want to feel that way. And by putting those worship songs on and turning our focus onto Him, we are not going to feel any worse. We are in fact going to be looking to God and therefore feel better in our spirit too. Check out Mood Boosting Worship Songs, which is a youtube playlist of the songs I used to and still do listen to.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

We have a choice. To go with how our flesh feels or to tune into and recognise the Holy Spirit in each of us (as children of God). We can use that power that He has gifted us with. The power of the Holy Spirit. And then there is Love, we can choose to love. Love God first, others second and then ourselves. By doing these, in this order, not only are we following the commandments but also we are turning our focus around, encouraging others which should then encourage us. As giving and doing good to others can make us feel better, like we are doing and offering good into the world. As proven through the Five ways to wellbeing campaign.

Matthew 22:37-40 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.

There are so many more verses we can look at to help encourage and uplift our spirits:

Biblical Meditation is a great way to refocus and be encouraged by the word of God. So feel free to save this post or the above picture for future reference.

Encouragement prayer for when your feeling down:

Dear Lord,

Thank you for your encouraging words in scripture. Please be with us when we are feeling down. We ask that you lift us up and remind us of your unfailing love and promises for us. Help us to keep our eyes on you in the good times and the bad, for all time. Remind us of these verses, especially when we feel we need it most.

Thank you Lord for your Love for us and help us to be that love for others too.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen

I hope and pray this has helped you. Let me know in the comments below if you have any encouraging tips or stories to help others too.
