How to Hear God Speak

How to Hear God Speak

If you know God speaks to others and want to hear Him for yourself, then you can know how to hear God speak to you today.

We know that the Bible is the primary source of how God speaks to us, so reading the Word should be our priority!

Throughout scripture, God speaks directly to people too, to Abraham, Samuel, Daniel, Jonah, Paul, to name a few! He spoke audibly, through dreams, prophets and in the New Testament through the Holy Spirit.

He still speaks to us today! We know He wants a relationship with us, and relationships include conversation, otherwise known as prayer.

Prayer shouldn’t be a monologue of our needs and wants, but a two-way conversation with Him. He wants us to talk to Him, and He wants to speak to you too! But sadly, we can often forget or miss this point and don’t give Him space or a chance to do so. That is why I’m writing this post, so you can know how to come to Him and hear Him for yourself.

“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”

-Jeremiah 33:3

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

-Romans 10:17

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.”

-Hebrew 1:1-2

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

-John 10:27

“And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”

-1 Samuel 3:10

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”

-John 16:13

How to Hear God Speak

  1. SET TIME ASIDE: 10 mins plus, the longer you have, the greater the chance of a conversation you get
  2. NO DISTRACTIONS: Find a quiet space and turn off phone notifications, etc.
  3. DRAW TO THE THRONE: Turn your attention to God & invite the Holy Spirit to fill you.
  4. OFFER PRAISE & WORSHIP: Give God the praise He deserves, recognise His authority and magnificence. E.g. “You are the alpha & omega, you created the whole earth and know how many stars are in the sky and call them by name, you know how many hairs are on our head and my innermost thoughts. I praise you because you are the Father of all things, King of Kings and Lord of Lords. You are the God of love, forgiveness, grace and mercy.”
  5. Give Thanks: Offer God thanks. E.g., for Jesus and His sacrifice, overcoming death and salvation. Then continue with personal thanks.
  6. PRAY: Say to God, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” Then ask God to open your spiritual ears and eyes. Then ask your specific question (one at a time); general questions are harder to get a response to. As with anyone, it’s the same with God, so be specific.
  7. LISTEN: Now is the time to be quiet and listen for Him. Sit in this space for as long as you can and wait for His voice.
  8. RESPOND: Ask Him a question in response to His words or the picture He gives you.  E.g. “What does that mean”

Remember that your own thoughts may come up with something, but God’s words will most often be something that we don’t usually say or think.

Just a few examples from the last few years that I’ve heard or seen from Him: “Cedar”,  “Rollerbot”, “Gunzo”. A picture of a phoenix tree, a phoenix rising. Sometimes I ask Him what they mean and He responds. Other times, I end up Googling it and am drawn to a specific result, which is very clear, and the Holy Spirit confirms in me that it is what He was referring to or meant by it. Then there have been dreams from Him, too; these are clearly from Him as they hit differently, and I usually wake up straight after, and tend to be very clear instructions.
